A national collaboration redesigning the infrastructure of organ transplantation.

Project ZeroWait is a cross-sector initiative uniting clinicians, researchers, and technology partners to close the structural gaps that limit how many patients receive transplants—and how quickly they do.

With BMI OrganBank as the core platform, the consortium is building a more connected transplant system: one that improves organ utilization, accelerates decision-making, and expands access to life-saving transplants.

A National Challenge

The kidney transplant system is constrained not by demand, but by infrastructure.

Today, coordination gaps between organ procurement organizations, transplant centers, and surgical teams introduce friction at every step of the process. Limited preservation time compresses clinical decision-making windows, encouraging conservative choices that can leave viable organs unused. And legacy systems—built for a different era of transplantation—do not support the real-time visibility modern care requires.

The result is a system that underperforms against both its clinical potential and its economic value.

Incremental improvements are not enough.
The system requires coordinated redesign.

What We are Building

A Connected Approach to Transplantation

Project ZeroWait is building a collaborative infrastructure model that aligns technology, clinical practice, and policy around a shared goal: increasing successful transplants.

At its core, the consortium is focused on:

  • Expanding decision-making time through advanced organ preservation and monitoring capabilities
  • Improving system-wide visibility across procurement, transport, and transplant teams
  • Increasing organ utilization by enabling more confident clinical decision-making
  • Accelerating translation of innovation from research settings into clinical practice and policy

Uniting World-Class Expertise

The consortium brings together leading transplant surgeons, researchers, clinical teams, and strategic partners across the United States to solve challenges no single institution can address alone.

Rooted in a Regional Innovation Ecosystem

Anchored in the Research Triangle, one of the nation’s most dynamic biomedical innovation corridors, Project ZeroWait leverages deep academic, clinical, and translational infrastructure to accelerate discovery and real-world implementation.

Translating Innovation into Impact

From advancing organ preservation technologies to bridging the gap between research and clinical adoption, the consortium is designed to move proven innovations into routine transplant practice—and inform policy that improves organ utilization nationally.

Consortium Partners

Project ZeroWait is built through collaboration with leading organizations across transplantation, research, and healthcare delivery, including:

BMI OrganBank serves as the consortium’s core technology platform, enabling system-wide coordination and innovation.
