Following extensive preclinical testing of the OrganBank™ device for kidney preservation, BioMedInnovations announced the next phase of its research program: an autotransplantation study involving the explantation, ex-vivo perfusion, and re-implantation of porcine kidneys.
The study, conducted by the ExVivo Organ Laboratory at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, was designed to evaluate kidneys following more than 24 hours of perfusion using BMI’s transportable OrganBank™ system at sub-normothermic room temperature.
The autotransplantation model represented an important progression from evaluating organs during ex-vivo perfusion to studying how kidneys perform following preservation and subsequent transplantation. By removing and later re-implanting the kidney in the same animal, the study design provides a controlled model for investigating post-transplant organ performance following extended preservation.
The study built upon BMI’s preceding preclinical program, which evaluated more than 30 non-human primate, porcine, and discarded human kidneys during extended room-temperature perfusion.
This next phase of research was intended to further the development and evaluation of BMI’s approach to extended kidney preservation while generating additional preclinical evidence to inform the OrganBank platform’s continued development.
