BioMedInnovations announced the publication of research utilizing its CaVESWave® organ and tissue perfusion platform in Transplantation. The study was conducted by an international research team investigating the potential use of discarded human kidneys as extracellular matrix scaffolds for regenerative medicine and transplantation research.
Nine donated human kidneys were machine-perfused at 4°C for 12 hours using a modified Krebs solution and BMI’s cardioemulation perfusion technology. The CaVESWave® system produces a pulsatile waveform designed to generate physiologic systolic and diastolic pressures and flow rates within the organ while allowing researchers to control perfusion conditions.
The researchers evaluated whether detergent-based decellularization could remove cellular material while preserving the kidney’s underlying extracellular matrix and vascular architecture. The resulting scaffolds maintained structural characteristics, vascular function, and growth factors considered important for future recellularization.
The study demonstrated another application of controlled ex vivo perfusion as a research platform, allowing investigators to study and manipulate human organs outside the body under carefully controlled conditions.
